Tilte ideas

We have thought about title names which would relate to our film idea. To get more inspiration for our film title we will ask for audience feedback on what they think of the names, which one they prefer and any other names they think would fit.

These are our film title ideas:
  • When love goes back in time
  • About love
  • When the past becomes reality
  • Love the second time round
  • second time love

Plot summary

After thinking of different ideas for our film trailer we have chosen to make it for a romance. Our plot summary is an old couple are going through a rough time having a lot of arguments when it gets too much the woman starts packing her bags and knocks off an old photo album from the shelf. The couple stop and look through the photos saying how in love they used to be and they wish they could go back to that time. We see the pages fly open stopping on certain photos. For example photos from when they have film nights and baking days at home. And also important memories like their first Christmas together and the day they got engaged.  Some of these photos will start playing as a video as a flash back memory. Throughout the trailer we will see different moments in their life both young and old. But as an audience we don’t know whether the couple get back together or not.

Ideas for trailer

This is the idea we have chosen to take forward:
At the beginning of the trailer we will see old hands turning pages on an old photo album. We hear the couple saying how they want to go back to them times then we see flashbacks of some of these moments. When they go to sleep we see their future rewind back to their past. They wake up as their 18 year old selves, we see this through a split screen when they realise they have transformed to their younger selves. Throughout the trailer we see clips of how they met and important moments from their life. Including another split screen to show that they met through an internet dating site.

Conventions of a film trailer

Collage of film magazine

This is my collage of different film magazine covers. These are different magazines showing different film of different genres. I have noticed that popular films such as Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Avatar have been on the front covers of the magazines Empire and Total Film. This suggests that these magazines are the most well known. On these two magazines the title isn't seen as the most important part many of the images are shown above the title because audiences are more familiar with these magazines. However the film magazines Entertainment, Premiere and Best Movie all have the images behind the title.

Convention of a film magazine cover

I have looked into what the conventions of a film magazine cover are. This will help me when I am creating my own.

Here I have looked at the film magazine cover for The Hunger Games. I have used my knowledge of the conventions of a film magazine cover to point out the conventions on this magazine.

Collage of action posters

All these magazine posters have features in common. They are all quite dark and bold. In the majority of these posters there is action and weapons being shown. This automatically tells you that they are action films. Seeing these weapons in the posters  tells you that the target audience wouldn't be young children they would be more for teenagers and adults. In some of the posters they show the location in the background and some have a more colour than others. All of these posters have a character from the film on them, some are only figures where you cant see their faces. All the titles are bold and stand out.

collage of drama posters

These film posters from drama films have mostly dark or plain backgrounds. The text is noticable and in different colours.

collage of romance posters

This is my collage of romance film posters. All of these posters have the main characters as the image/ I believe that most of these posters are showing a significant snapshot from actual film. The text of each of these posters are different and each one looks effective. Most of the posters have a twoshot of a the characters together. This expresses that fact that they are romances.

making my own film poster for the hangover

I have taken these point into consideration and have recreated the film poster for The Hangover:

This is the film poster I have made for the film The Hangover. I have collected images from the film and have framed each of them and made them into a collage. I got this idea from the end of the film where they have the photos from the missing camera being showed. I think this worked well as adding this to the film makes the poster connect with film more.  I think this has worked effectively as from the feedback I got was all positive about the collage. The colours have all fit into the same colour scheme. If i was to do this again I would look at using different styles for example using one photo on the poster, or I could blend the photos into each other to show a different kind of collage.

How to make a successful film poster

I have looked into what makes a successful film poster these are some of the points you need to consider:

Conventions of a film poster

I have looked into the conventions of a film poster. Some of the conventions seen on film posters are:

Images are used to catch the audiences eye when they pass the poster. The images are usually shots from the film or character shots. They contain aspects to show the genre of the film and give away something about the film. The image has to be clear as it portrays the story of the film.

The film title is an important part of a film poster. This is because without it the audience wont know what it is called and they wont be able to look up information on it.

Film posters need to include narrative elements. This is important to include this so that the audience have an idea of the storyline. For example for romantic films there are usually couples shown on the poster, and on horror posters there is usually blood.

Tag lines are used on film posters to give audiences a hint to what will happen in the film. they aimed to be memorable for audiences so that they think about the film when they think of the tagline. Sometimes tag lines are direct quote from the film or even rhetorical questions. Their purpose is to tease the viewer.

The location seen in film posters can be an important part it. Having the subject of the image in a certain location will give the audience an idea of where the film will be set and it could also help tell the genre or story line of the film.

The release date on film posters are made to be clear. This is because people don't want to search the poster for long to find the date.

At the bottom of film posters is the credits block. This includes the studio name, producers, script writers, musician, designer name, editors name, cinematographer, executive producers, story writer, screen writer and directors name.

Star ratings and critics reviews are sometimes used on film posters. These are used to enhance the films representation.

In film posters there are different icons. These are icons to say about the film being in 3D. There are also sometimes icons for advertising for example for Facebook and Twitter.

Film posters can be seen on buses, billboards, newspapers and magazines.

Dear John film poster:
I have looked at this film poster as it is a romance film which I am thinking about doing.
The way the two characters are sitting look quite relaxed but having the sea in the background could show that they get separated.

Harry Potter film poster:

These are two different Harry Potter film posters. The first one is from Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone, the second is from Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix. They have a few similarities and a few differences. for example they are both very different in the way they have been shown as in the first one there are many photos in one and in the second one there is only one photo. They both have the same main character on in the middle and the same font for the titles.

If these posters didn't have a picture they wouldn't work very well as the picture is one of the most important parts of a film poster. Without it, it would look plain and boring and people wouldn't be interested in seeing the film as there was nothing to catch their attention. If these posters had different texts for the title it would be less recognisable as people know the film to be in this font.

Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters film poster:
I have looked at this film poster as it comes under the genre of action horror and fantasy.
If this poster didn't have the title in this text and colour people might get the wrong idea about the film as this tells a lot about it.

Epic film poster:
I have looked at this poster as it is different in the way that it is completely animated and that it is aimed at children.

Research into the promotional package of Harry Potter

To research into the promotional package further I have looked into the promotional package for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince:
These are some of the film posters that were made for the film, they all show significant screen shots and characters in the film. They are used to tease the audience and make the audience want to know more. This could make them look around for more information on the film, watch the trailers and watch the film in the cinema or buy it. Although I think in some cases having more than one poster could give away too much.
This video shows all the teaser trailers which were made for this film as well as the main trailer. I think having more than one trailer can really connect the audience with the film.  They keep the audience wanting to know and see more. However I feel that having this many different trailers gives away most of the storyline. Even though different parts are seen in each clip they still have similar clips in each one, they just show them in different ways. This is good for promoting film but I think it could cause the audience to be disappointed when they see the film because most of what happens is seen in the trailers.

This is some of the official merchandise for Harry Potter. This includes hats, scarfs, jewellery, bags, belts, phone cases, wallets, mouse mats, neck ties, socks and watches, movie replicates and models. These are all items relating to the film either having a word or picture to do with it on the item. I think having merchandise is a good way to promote films. I think this because for films like harry potter there is a lot of things you see in the film that people would like to have in real life. For example, the philosophers stone, a wand or even Hermione's never ending bag. Having these items as part of their merchandise that the audience can buy could make them feel closer to the characters and feel more involved.

This is the Empire magazine cover for the film. Promoting the film through a famous film magazine cover is a good way to gain audience. Not only will it bring attention to the film it would also bring attention to the magazine. for people who regularly see the magazine would get to find out more about the film, however the audience of the film might be drawn to the magazine to find out what is written in there that they didn't already know.
I have found it interesting to see all the different way films can be promoted. I think that when it comes to creating my own trailer I can use some of the ideas from this promotional package to help promote my film trailer.

Promotional package

I have looked into what makes up a promotional package for film. Below I have explained what is used for promotion and how they help in the promotional side of films:

Film posters are used to promote the film as they often show screenshots from the film to make the audience want to know more about what happens in that shot. These are seen on billboards, busses, magazines and newspapers and other places also.

The film was also promoted through being on a magazine cover. This helps to promote the film as the audience would want to read more about the film and read exclusive interviews about the film.

There we five film trailers made for this film. Four of them were teaser trailers which are under a minute long each.

Merchandise helps promote the film as all the items would have the logo on or be an item from the film.

Social network pages are created for the film to give the impression that the characters live on in real life.

Online quizzes are created to test the audiences knowledge of the film and characters. This appeals to the audience as they can feel more involved.

Video games have been made based on the films. These have been created so that the audience can feel more involved with the films as they can play as the characters doing what they have done in the film.
