Evaluation question 4

How did you use new medias technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

As part of the construction stage I have used three main programmes on the apple macs. These were Final cut, garage band and Photoshop. I had previously used the programmes final cut and garage band for my AS media production so I was familiar with how with how to use these. However as I created a trailer I learnt to create different effects on final cut. I learnt how to create a split screen. For my ancillary texts I used Photoshop to create them. I knowledge of Photoshop however I had never created a poster or magazine cover using it. This programme was new to use in media for these texts. I found that Photoshop works slightly different on a mac computer to a windows computer. Therefore I had to learn where the tools were that I needed.

Throughout the research and planning stages I have used Blogger. On this I have added images, videos, mind maps and more to show my research and planning stages. After researching, planning and constructing my trailer I used the online programmes Facebook and YouTube. I used these programmes to receive feedback for our film trailer.

For the evaluation stage I have learnt to use a new online programme called Prezi. This is similar to PowerPoint however it allows to be more creative with how you present. To make it look more creative I found it quicker and easier to use this programme to PowerPoint as PowerPoint can take a long time to get all the effects right and to make sure the timing is right.

Evaluation question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In real film trailers I have seen the title and the release date are both shown at the end of the trailer. I have used this convention in my film trailer as it makes the most sense to show the clips of the film first to get the audience interested and then tell them the title and the release date. The font I have used for these is clear and bold however it still fits in with the genre.

As most film involving teenage bullying I have set my trailer in and around school. However other films trailers would probably show more variations of locations in and out of the school to show the characters in many different places and situations.

I think in a way my media product breaks the convention of the use of costume and props. This is because in most media products involving teenage bullying the characters are in school uniform when they are at school. As my characters are sixth form students I felt that uniforms weren't appropriate. We didn’t use many props as the elements of the film we decided to show in the trailer did not need many.
We have used a variety of different camera angles and different clips throughout our trailer to develop the conventions of real media products. This worked well as I was able to show I had improved with my camera work and editing over the year. In terms of editing I have used the usual fades in and fades out through out. However I have managed to include a split screen also. I think that the split screen has worked well as it is showing two sides of the story at once and it helps to introduce a new character and makes the trailer a bit more interesting.

There are elements in our trailer that has created intrigue to make the audience want to see and know more. This is in two parts of the trailer. At the beginning when we see the text message saying ‘I know your secret’, this makes the audience want to know what the secret is and who it is who has found out. This is also seen at the end of the trailer when the victim has been referred to a councillor and then we see her writing a suicide note. We decided to put these clips in this order to make the audience want to if she commits suicide or whether the clips have just been put like this to confuse them.

Our film poster uses the conventions of real film posters. This is because we have included an image, film title, tag line and a billing box.  These are all elements of real media texts. The colours on our poster are fairly dark to set a mood to the film. The magazine also uses conventions of real media texts. It includes the main elements of real film magazine covers including the full page image, the magazine title, and elements showing what else is included inside the magazine.

Final film trailer

Film Magazine

Film Poster

This is our final film poster. We have created this using Photoshop.

- the image isn't the full page but is in a box filling most of the page to frame the image so that it is clear.
-  to improve it we could go around the image to make sure there wasn't any line left around the image we cut out
- added a white wall to background so she looks like she's in the corner of a room. we have added words to this way to give away parts of storyline but making it look like they have been engraved.
-this didn't work too well as they were meant to be discreet

ideas for magazine and poster

This is one of our ideas for our film poster. We have used the idea of having both sides of a brick wall. On one side is the girl being bullied in a dark room looking at the messgaes on her phone from her bullies. On the other side of the wall is the bullies. They are outside laughing together with their phones in their hands. This would work well as the audience would be able to get an idea of who the characters are in the film. However this could give away part of the storyline because we would be showing the bullies to the audience straight away instead of letting them find out through the trailer or the film.

tagline ideas

For our film poster we need to include a tagline. The tagline is meant to have a related meaning to the films storyline. As a group we have come up with some ideas for the tag line and asked our audience for feedback. These are our ideas:

A secret that should have never been told
Trust is overrated
No one will ever know... or will they
A secret will be revealed
When your deepest secret is discovered
Beware of who your friends are

After getting audience feedback on our tagline ideas we have decided to use the tag line 'A secret that should have never been told'.

Feedback

Once I had finished editing my trailer I uploaded it to social networking sites such as Youtube and Facebook to get feedback. This is one of my comments from Facebook:

This feedback will help us to evaluate our trailer. It shows that our storyline is clear and that our audience would be interested in watching this film.

This is a comment from the trailer on Youtube. From this feedback I will be able to make the changes to the trailer to make sure that the music doesn't have an instant cut between them.

I have also asked other media students for feedback on our trailer. This feedback tells us that that the music and titles fit in with the storyline and that the clips we have shown are in the right order.

Making changes after feedback

After getting feedback on my film trailer I have made the changes that were needed. I had made a spelling mistake on the word 'starring' and have changed it to the right spelling.

I had a suggestion to adjust the music so that there wasnt a sudden cut in between it. I have taken this feedback and adjusted the music to close the gap between the two.

analysis of Cyberbully

After watching the trailer to CyberBully I have made a timeline of what happens throughout. By looking at this I can get an idea of what type of music I should use and to give me ideas on the different clips I could include.

I like this trailer because I think it fits in with my idea quite well. Because of this I can get a lot of inspiration from it. I think I am going to use similar style clips in my trailer as well as music that sets a similar mood.

Making the music

As we couldnt use music that had already been made by artists we have made our own music. To do this I have used Garage Band. This piece of software allows you to create music using the different instuments provided. To create this I have used the different instruments and dragged them onto the tracks. Here I was able to arrange the music in the composition I wanted. I think the music I have made works well with the storyline. However some of it could be seen as too repetitive.

title ideas

As we now have a new storyline for our film trailer, as a group we have discussed different title ideas that could fit the storyline. These are some of our ideas:

Unexpected
Complex                /
In a moment
Kept secret           //////
Betrayed
Complications     //
Misunderstood  //

After collecting audience feedback we have decided that 'Kept Secret' will be the name of our trailer. This relates to our trailer as it is about a girl who is keeping something secret.

Planning our trailer

Everything was going great for sixth form student Sahmeek until one day someone finds out her secret that she is gay. Sahmeek comes from an Islamic background which is why she had kept this secret. She confronts her friend Sara who was the only person who knew her secret. From this point she starts being bullied by people she though were here friends and she gets cyberbullied also. Once the bullying gets too much for Sahmeek she is faced with the option of the long process of counselling or ending her life. What will she do?

storyline

After thinking of different ideas for our new storyline for the trailer we have come up with this idea:

When girl 1 and girl 2 moved to secondary school they became friends with a group of girls. When girl 2 tells her friends that she is gay they start to pick on her pushing her out of group. Girls 1 evidently joins the bulling to fit in with her friends. This bullying carries on through out her school life outside of school. A few years later girl 2 comes across her childhood friend and high school bully (girl 1) and decides its time to confront her. She eventually finds out that girl 1 is also gay, when she saw how her friends reacted when girl 2 had told them she was scared to tell them herself so instead of being bullied she decided to join the bullies.

Change of storyline

After our research and planning for our original storyline we started having problems with filming. It took a while for us to find people, a male actor, to agree to act in our trailer. However because of time diffulcuties with finding times and days that everyone could do we had to result in changing our storyline. Together we have come up with different ideas where we can just use female actors in the trailer.

Animatic

This is our animatic. We have used still images to work out how we are going to edit our film. Also what camera angles we will use and to get an idea of how long we will have each shot. I think the timing of each scene has worked well because we have managed to time each scene to make it fit in the overall time needed. To make sure that these times are kept throughout our filming we will need to plan each scene properly. The titles I have used throughout the animatic has worked well. I think this because the colours and font fits in with the genre of our trailer. When I was editing this on final cut I had some problems with adding transitions in. They didn't always fit in the right places making it harder to get the transitions to be at the right size. If I was to create this again I could draw out the scenes in every camera angle we are planning to use. This would help to visualise the final trailer.

Chosen distribution

I have decided to choose the Univursal/ Working Titles distribution. I am using this because many popular romance films have been distributed by this. It is a well known institution which will make the audience confident that the film would be good after knowing of other films similar that has done well.
